Beyond the Garments: Honoring Greatness with a Custom LeBron James Tribute Poster

Every now and then, itโs great to step away from standard design workflows and create something purely out of passion. As a massive basketball fan, inspiration struck recently, and I decided to design a custom graphic honoring one of the greatest to ever play the game: LeBron James.
I wanted to craft something bold, dynamic, and worthy of a magazine cover, blending sports culture with high-impact visual artwork.
The Concept & Style
The goal for this piece was to capture the intensity and legacy of “King James” reaching the title of the NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer. Instead of a typical promotional banner, I went for a gritty, athletic magazine cover layout:
- High-Contrast Typography: Heavy, metallic gold lettering for “ALL TIME LEADING SCORER” set against a dark, textured backdrop to give it a championship-caliber feel.
- Editorial Layout: Incorporating structured player info badges, stats layouts, and sub-headings to give it an authentic sports magazine aesthetic.
- Brand Touch: Subtle placement of the Smarties Apparel logo to connect our creative design passion with our brand identity.
The Design Process in Photoshop
To achieve this specific retro-meets-modern aesthetic, I worked extensively in Adobe Photoshop, focusing heavily on lighting, textures, and color grading:
- Composition & Masking: Isolated LeBronโs portrait to create depth, placing him centrally while layering bold block typography behind his shoulders.
- Multi-Filter Grading: Layered multiple camera raw adjustments, noise textures, and contrast filters to give the skin tones a sharp, high-detail finish and the overall canvas a gritty, vintage paper texture.
- Lighting Effects: Enhanced the lighting with warm golden and fiery orange highlights, accentuating the Lakers colors while making the subject pop against the dark background.
Sharing Creative Passions
Once the design was polished, we shared the final piece across our Smarties Apparel social media pages. It’s always rewarding to merge personal hobbies like basketball with apparel and graphic design work.
Whether it’s custom sportswear production or creative poster art, design is all about capturing energy and telling a story.
